Water-fed pole vs traditional window cleaning: which is better?

Published 13 June 2026

If you have booked a window cleaner recently, you may have noticed many now clean upstairs windows from the ground using a long pole and purified water, rather than a ladder, bucket and squeegee. So which method is better, water-fed pole or traditional cleaning? Here is how the two compare, and which one Tidal cleaners use.

Traditional window cleaning

The traditional method uses a bucket of soapy water, an applicator and a squeegee, with a ladder for anything above ground level. It is the method most of us picture, and in skilled hands it gives a good finish on glass you can reach. The downsides are ladders for upstairs windows, which raise safety and access issues, and that it cleans the glass but not always the frames.

Water-fed pole and pure water

A water-fed pole feeds purified water up a telescopic pole to a brush at the top, so the cleaner can reach upstairs windows, frames and sills from the ground. The water is filtered to remove the minerals that leave spots, so the glass is rinsed and left to dry without streaks, and no detergent is needed. Frames and sills get cleaned at the same time.

How the two methods compare

  • Finish. Both can leave glass clear. Pure water rinses frames and sills too, and dries without streaks.
  • Upstairs windows. Water-fed poles reach them safely from the ground. Traditional cleaning needs ladders.
  • Safety. Working from the ground is far safer than working at height on ladders.
  • How long it stays clean. With no detergent residue left behind, pure-water cleans can stay looking good for longer.
  • Drying. Pure water dries clear on its own, so there is no wiping needed.

Which is better, and which Tidal uses

For most homes, water-fed pole cleaning with pure water is the modern standard, mainly because it cleans frames as well as glass and reaches upstairs windows safely from the ground. Tidal cleaners use modern water-fed pole systems for exactly these reasons. There are still moments where a traditional touch helps, for example interior glass or certain ground-floor jobs, and a good local cleaner will use the right approach for your property.

Frequently asked questions

Does pure water really leave no streaks?

Yes. Because the minerals that cause spotting are filtered out, the glass is rinsed clean and dries clear without needing to be wiped.

Can a water-fed pole reach all my windows?

It reaches most domestic windows, including upstairs. Very awkward access is handled case by case, and your local cleaner will let you know.

Is one method cheaper than the other?

Pricing is driven more by size, access and how often you have it done than by the method. See our guide to window cleaning costs, or get an instant quote.
